This is my favorite review on Michael McLean:
QUOTE Michael McLean is a son of a bitch or: How I lost my testimony at EFY
When I was a teenager, my friend and I went to EFY. We loved it. One of the highlights of the experience was a Michael McLean concert. For you unfortunate souls that don't know who Michael McLean is, he's a mormon musician known for his super-sappy "faith-promoting" music.
At the EFY concert, he sang for probably 45 mins before playing his most well known song, "You're Not Alone." He had been singing the song for a minute or two when he abruptly stopped and bowed his head. Everyone started looking around wondering what was wrong with him. After what felt like a very long time he lifted his head, moved closer to the mic, and in a quiet voice said, "I don't know why I'm doing this or where it's coming from, but everyone stand up and hold your neighbor's hand." So, we all stand up and start holding hands. "Now, sing with me." The entire room starts belting out the song, "You're not . . . alone . . . . " The "spirit" is unbelievable. Everyone is crying and hugging. I believe I'm feeling the spirit for the first time in my life. My testimony is so strong.
Fast forward a year and my same friend and I are off to EFY again. How could I not go again after the amazing experience I had the year before? Well, would you believe it? Our performer for the concert this year is none other than Michael McLean again! I'm a little bummed, because "been there, done that," but at least I know he puts on a good show.
The concert goes well. But then, about 45 mins into it, he starts playing his hit, "You're Not Alone." [you probably see where this is going]. He had been singing the song for a minute or two when suddenly he stops playing and bows his head. My friend and I look at each other like, "what. the. fuck?" Sure enough, like a machine, he lifts his head and whispers into the mic, "I don't know why I'm doing this or where it's coming from, but everyone stand up and hold your neighbor's hand." My friend blurts out "Bull Shit" and we try to leave, but they won't let us. So, I have this surreal experience of watching hundreds of kids crying and hugging each other, singing over and over, "You're not alone" while I sit feeling hurt, betrayed, and well, alone.
tl:dr: Michael McLean "receives" the same spiritual prompting at two separate concerts, breaking my delicate teenage testimony. I always picture the Ross/McLean clan getting together and each one touting themselves louder than the other.
Bunch of phonies, really.
