I remember hearing about devil in the white city, maybe on a podcast, and thinking it sounds good, but that it would probably scare me lol. I’m not a fan of true crime stuff.

I have authors that I pretty much read everything they’ve written, like Mary Roach, Taylor Branch, David McCullough, Jon Meacham… and a lot of times in their books, other books are referenced so I’ll read those. I get recommendations from podcasts and I’ll also just go to the bookstore and see what they have. I’m going to start “the secret history of home economics” soon and that’s one I just saw in a bookstore.

Where does everyone get their books usually?

I have a kindle paper white so either Kindle unlimited or my libraries Libby catalog for e books. Audiobooks is entirely from Libby I’m debating about trying audible out and seeing how I like it.

I do also get physical books from my library. Usually new release mystery and thrillers since I typically don’t keep those for collection/display purposes.

Purchasing books new probably 80% come from Barnes and noble and 20% from a few local bookstores.

I’d say probably 80% of my overall purchases are used though. Usually from library $1 book sales that happen at pretty much every library branch within an hour radius of me.

A large bookish goal for me in 2024 is to not only track my reading but track where the book came from and how much I purchased it for as well as if I donated it after reading.

I LOVED fourth wing. The disability rep was perfection probably because the author herself has EDS.
I also enjoyed ACOTAR but I don’t get the compressions. They are two vastly different storylines. If anything I’d say ACOTAR is more closely related to being a more adult version of the cruel prince and fourth wing more closely related to divergent but with dragons.

I’ve been listening to more audiobooks in the second half of 2023 usually while I sew or cross stitch. Anybody have any favorite audiobooks? I tend to prefer mystery/thriller, fantasy and horror. I also enjoy memoirs when they are narrated by the person the memoir is about.

I’ve been on a hot streak for October but I know November is going to be much slower. Trying to finish 5 more books plus an audio book before iron flame is released.
Currently reading midnight is the darkest hour. About halfway through. It’s fine
Current listening is ninth house. Also fine
Need to finish 4 library holds that all came in at the same time
    The hexologists
    The last devil to die
    None of this is true
    These vicious games
If I can pull all 6 off by November 1st I’ll be at 19 for October.

    November reading plans
    The shining
    Fourth wing reread
    Iron flame
    Crescent city 1 and 2

Omg yes, Lucy Score is a prime example of women writing women badly. "Code red" for periods? Really???

But, even if you consider it a double standard, I think it's worth discussing.

Also, hard to believe I missed anything I wanted to say during my long post 😂 but I do agree about Riley not being literary classic. I rate books based on how much I enjoy them, not whether they'll be remembered in 50 years, or not whether critics like them, but for me, personally.

His books are VERY good to read, imo. I've enjoyed them, they feel quick and easy and addictive because they are.

I think everything is always good and worth discussing. Just stating my point of views. I have read some mens point of views and i just think to my self would a men actually think this or is it based on a women. For pure curiosity i want to read a male author who writes romance mainly fantasy and only has the male perspective.

As for lucy score the moment i read the reviews. Stating how she writes certain things like a middle schooler would, it just a turn off when her book as for adult. “Code red” i have not heard that since 7th grade.

Either way I’m having a hard time finding a good read due to my book hangover so i wont be picking any books up any time soon until Iron Flame gets to my home.

Which btw side note who ever pre-ordered on walmart and target the black sprayed edges are out of order unfortunately. For those who pre-ordered i hope you got it from amazon.

I’m going to the midnight release for iron flame and the special edition of fourth wing. We’re supposed to be guaranteed the black sprayed edges.

I did not intend to start this debate just think it’s worth noting because I don’t believe his work would have sold as well if it wasn’t for the obvious marketing towards women and the choice of a gender ambiguous pen name. It has nothing to do with the quality of his work which I think is very entertaining for a popcorn thriller. I view them as a great palette cleanser in between denser books. His publishing team has definitely nailed the algorithm I’ll give them that. They aren’t well written but I gave both the only one left and lock every door 5 stars because I had an enjoyable reading experience.

House across the lake was trash. Utter putrid dumpster filled with decomposing human flesh.

I’ve read all of the Riley sager books. Here’s my ranking for anyone interested.
    From best to worst
    Lock every door
    The only one left
    Home before dark
    Final girls
    The last time I lied
    Survive the night
    House across the lake

House across the lake was the only one I actively disliked. I could go on a whole rant about how much I hated it but I won’t. I’ve also never read any of the books under his actual name.

I will also add that I do find it moderately problematic that a male author writes under a feminine pen name because his books aren’t taking off in the mainstream market. Many many people don’t know that Riley sager is actually a male author and a pen name. I have no problem with pen names in general but I think it was a deliberate choice to get more female readers

Ohh I want to write all these down.

There's been some interesting looking thrillers out recently, one that I really want to read is the Lisa Jewell book "none of this is true".

Does anyone use StoryGraph? I’d love to follow you and see what your reading or have read.

Nope, I have contemplated signing up but I think I'm too lazy to do it lol.

My hold for none of this is true just came in. Looking forward to reading it.

Haha I have been doing a reading challenge this past year and I needed a way to keep track of it. So, I just use the free version. And, I can say that I reached my goal plus some already.

I use Bookmory to log my reading I love how visual it is and that I don’t have to log in reviews. I also love that I can give half stars

Someone commented about it possibly being from soy, which they eat and drink a lot of. I’m sure she’ll dismiss that crazy notion because she’s bat shit head over heels in love with soy but she’s rattled off too many of the side effects, including hives, to ignore it. She even wants to grow soy beans! I stay away from soy because I feel there’s too many negative effects, for all ages and genders.

I found out a few years ago I’m HIGHLY sensitive to soy. Soy lechtin doesn’t usually bother me in moderation but the minute I eat something with straight soy in it or edamame I have a massive migraine and terrible stomach cramps.

I also wonder if she’s taking antacids. Protonix made me break out in head to toe hives from the firey pits or hell. I took it for almost 2 weeks before the hives started and then another week of them refusing to go away before we figured out what it was that was causing them.

I need a good, sucks you right in mystery/thriller series or a comedy murder mystery series like Agatha Raisin or Stephanie Plum.(I just noticed how similar their last names are lol) I can't seem to get into anything. I started like eight books the last couple weeks and I never go back to them. I need something I can't put down. Anyone have a good recommendation?

The Finlay Donovan series by elle cosimano is a fun comedy cozy mystery series. There’s 3 already out and book 4 comes out soon. Plot- Finlay is a writer and mom recently separated after her husband cheats on her. She’s trying to navigate life when she’s mistaken as a hit woman.

Not a series but killing me by Michele Gannon is a super fun over the top thriller about a woman who escapes a serial killer and flees to Vegas just to get entangled in another serial killers plot. She teams up with a prostitute and noir obsessed motel owner.

How's everyone's reading going? Anyone anticipating anything? I'm really looking forward to Britney Spears book, and Henry Winkler's as well.

October is going way too fast. I had hoped to read so many more books this month than I have actually read.

Looking forward to iron flames release in a few weeks. The BIG book news that I’m thrilled about though is TJ Klune’s announcement that he will be releasing a sequel to the house in the cerulean sea. Set for release September 2024. House in the cerulean sea is probably the best book I’ve ever read.

October’s been a good month for me. I hit my 60 book yearly goal with 13 already read for october (7 physical books 6 audio)

    Stand outs
Last house on needless street- read physically on KU. Really engaging. All my real thoughts would end in spoilers though.

Paul takes the form of a mortal girl- physical read for book club. A coming of age with fantasy element set in the 90s gay scene

Den of vipers- read physically. Terribly written but the smut was top tier. Please research the trigger warnings before diving in it’s definitely a dark romance

You’re not supposed to die tonight- audiobook. Fast paced YA thrilled. The voice actor was fantastic

Such sharp teeth- audio. Fun horror romance where a girl becomes a werewolf and has to figure out her life.

Drowning- audio. Another fast paced thriller about a plane crash and the effort to rescue the survivors.

hunter wearing a cone doesn’t mean they ever even took him to the vet. You can buy a cone right on Amazon or at the pet store. And if hunter is on meds where is the cheese or meat slices in her grocery haul to feed him the meds and no mention of giving him his daily meds in her morning routine.

Also she basically outed herself with the lie about carrying hunter up and down the stairs. If she can’t carry a laundry basket down stairs without issue there’s no way in hell she’s carrying a wiggly beagle around.
  12. .
There’s no way in hell she was carrying hunter up/down the stairs. He has to weigh 30 pounds (overweight for a beagle). She can barely walk around the kitchen without bracing herself and we’re expected to believe she scooped hunter up and carried him up a flight of narrow stairs not happening.

We recently had a scare with our pup. She’s fine thankfully but we had a week where the vet thought she was in congestive heart failure. She had been acting kinda winded on our walks and coughing and we felt a very small lump on her chest so I got a same day with her primary vet. The lump is just fatty tissue but the X-ray showed enlarging of her heart and free fluid sent to the cardiologist an hour away. Got an emergency appointment a week later. $1400 later to find out the x ray imaging was bad her heart wasn’t enlarged but she did have bronchitis. I cried almost every minute of the entire week thinking we would be losing her soon. Bronchitis has since cleared up and she’s on new allergy meds and back to herself.
All this to say I will never understand people that don’t take proper care of their pets and get them seen when they are in obvious pain/distress. Yes it is expensive but that is part of the commitment of having a pet. I shouldn’t expect any less from Darlene though.

Is it normal to decorate for Halloween that far in advance? I am not in a country where this is not a standard holiday, more something people do for fun. My kids do like it so we make pumpkins but no more than 1-2 weeks in advance.

My house has been decorated for Halloween inside since mid august. It’s my favorite holiday. I know that’s typically also not standard in the US but there’s a whole group of us that celebrate Halloween vibes year round.

About Hunter, that’s not arthritis. There’s definitely something wrong with his back leg. He couldn’t put any weight on it & walked on the other 3 just fine.

    Something is wrong.

    Darlene is a liar.

Hunter is walking just like our pup did when she tore the ligaments in her back leg not like a dog with arthritis walks. I doubt she’s even brought him to the vet. Our dog took a hard roll playing ball at the park but considering hunter doesn’t even do much as get a daily walk I would have to think he got injured another way. Maybe stepped on by darogre or kicked down the stairs?

Even if he had arthritis there is no way a dog should be limping that badly if he’s getting daily meds.

I never believed dar when she said Andrew was aggressive. I think the photos of him at RISE further prove that a lot of his behaviors were a reaction to her and the environment that he was stuck in. I honestly look forward to the day she drops him off in a long term living situation so he can get away from her.
